The Pupil sits at the first desk.) THE PUPIL: I like being in the classroom. It is more pleasant here inside, in the coolness, then outside. It is too hot in the summer. THE TEACHER’S DESK: Where are the others? Are they having their break? THE PUPIL (he raise and take a look, astonished): Who’s talking? THE TEACHER’S DESK: It’s me, The Teacher’s Desk. THE PUPIL (mistrustful): The Teacher’s Desk? THE TEACHER’S DESK: But of course. THE PUPIL: Can you talk? THE TEACHER’S DESK: As you see. THE PUPIL: Can the other things in the classroom talk, too? THE PLANK, THE BLACKBOARD, THE CHALK, THE SPONGE, THE PEG, THE BALL, THE STOVE, THE FLOWER (all together): Yes, we can talk. THE PUPIL: And why did my father not ever tell me about this? THE BLACKBOARD: Maybe he has forgotten since he grew up. And only the children can hear us. THE PUPIL: And why is this? THE PLANK: The grown-up ones don’t have the time, as they say. ELEVUL: Tell me more! THE CHALK: Let it be me the one to tell you, because I am the most important in the classroom. I am the one that Mr. Teacher is using to write with. THE BLACKBOARD (talking to The Chalk): But if won’t be me, The Blackboard, how could the children see the things written with you? I mean, it’s obvious I am the most important. THE SPONGE (talking to The Blackboard): Are you? But if won’t be me, The Sponge, to clean what’s written, how would the children copy such many things written on you? And how would you delete the wrong things to write right ones? I am the most… THE PLANK: It’s not you, but me! I, The Plank, am the most important! I hold inside of me the books where The Teacher takes all his knowledge from. THE TEACHER’S DESK: Let’s not exaggerate! THE STOVE: I, The Stove, am the most important, especially in the wintertime. I am the one who warms the children and The Teacher, too. THE PEG: What about the summertime? Who is the most important in the summertime? It’s me the most important, because I am holding the children’s clothes when’s too hot. THE BALL: What about me? I, The Ball, am not saying I’m the most important, but I am the one which the children love the most. THE TEACHER’S DESK: This is really-really true. THE PUPIL (talking to The Flower): What about you, don’t you have anything to say? Flower, are you not important? THE FLOWER: I am important, but I don’t want to involve myself in their messy scandal. THE CHALK: But I am the most…! THE BLACKBOARD: It’s not you, it’s me! THE SPONGE: No, it’s me! THE PLANK: Me, me! THE TEACHER’S DESK: Sicelen! We are all the same, all are important. THE PUPIL (after a break): But why don’t you want to tell the grown-ups about your wonderful gift? THE PLANK: They say ugly words of each other. THE PUPIL: Yes, it is true. I heard someone talking very dirty about Mr. Teacher. (Pause.) I don’t wanna grow up! THE TEACHER’S DESK: Unfortunately this is not possible. You will be a grown-up when it’s your turn. THE PUPIL: I don’t want to! I don’t want to! (He sits back and start to cry.) -THE END-
