there's a conference on the 10th of December at Senate House on Mick Imlah's work, featuring among many highlights a talk from Days of Roses favourite Andre Naffis-Sahely, and RHUL MA daddy Andrew Motion, among others. There's also a free reading from Imlah's new Selected Poems from 6pm. See details below:



To commemorate the publication of Mick Imlah's Selected Poems (Faber & Faber), edited by Mark Ford and with an introduction by Alan Hollinghurst, the Institute of English Studies will be presenting on Friday December 10 at Senate House a one-day conference on the poetry of Mick Imlah (1957-2009).

The conference will be followed by a John Coffin Memorial Reading from Imlah's Selected Poems: participants will include Martin Amis, Andrew Motion, Alan Hollinghurst, Helen Simpson, John Fuller, Peter McDonald, Glyn Maxwell, Stephen Romer, Isabel Fonseca, Alan Jenkins, Bernard O'Donoghue and Mark Ford.

This reading, which begins at 6.00, is free, and will also be held in Senate House, (Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU). It will be followed by a drinks reception.

Mick Imlah (1956 - 2009) was one of the most brilliant poets of his generation. He published just two collections, Birthmarks in 1988, and twenty years on, the long-awaited The Lost Leader, which won the Forward Prize, and was short-listed for the T.S. Eliot and Griffin prizes. Both volumes reveal a poetic sensibility that was wholly original: Imlah's poems are by turns lyrical, sardonic, hilarious, and unsettling; there is nothing quite like them in contemporary poetry.

This conference, timed to coincide with the publication of his Selected Poems (edited by Mark Ford and with an introduction by Alan Hollinghurst) will explore his life and work from a variety of angles. It will be followed by a reading of poems by or about Imlah by writers who knew and admired him, supported by the University of London's John Coffin Memorial Fund, by Faber, and by the Times Literary Supplement.
