“I don’t renounce at the intention to publish a book about the Indian humanism.[...]; that is to say about those Indian eternal values, created to uplift, to solace or to redeem the human being” (Mircea Eliade)
Now, I am closing all the books that I read about India, trying to take shape to some personal impressions. Within an immediate relationship with an inhabitant of the has-been Bharata, you cannot benefit from the liberty of a stranger. Nearby him, you feel yourself naked alike someone whose clothes have been stole and wakes up nude in the middle of the street. A kind of self-storm carries you between the inner heaven and the inner hell. Sometimes in harmony, sometimes in conflict, depends of the angle from which you bring yourself into this relationship. Obvious, these rippled states spring from the almost shocking contrast between our different culture, civilization, and education, a contrast that enriches you even when you feel the need to recoil. I want to mention just a bit from the specific of the qualities belonging to the Indian people. I decided to note them as an appreciation sign for those who left a crumb of India within my soul. Maybe they are the innate gifted nation. The intuition of the simple Indian man discovers you inside the quoin where you hid for ponder, and in front of him, you feel more naked than facing a licentiate European psychologist. “About the Orient, specially, it can be written all kinds of things. It depends on how much you are decided to say, on how much you are decided to hide.” (Mircea Eliade) I think that this tendency for hiding comes out from a sort of a helplessness feeling in face of a man, whose reconciliation with the own self, results from resignation. The man enriched by poorness, cured by the impossibility to pay a doctor, who do not know what humility means and irrespective of material conditions lives within a harmony impressively contrasting with the barbarian European agitation. In his serenity, he avows that “I am boring doing nothing”. The Indian “boring” is rather a way unto the self-cognition, while the disclaimer of the European boring is a way unto the self-alienation. The European will always tell you that he does all kinds of things while nothing does. He has no more time for seek into himself, for decently bring up his children; he has no time for him, no time for the others. Well, I think that time moved definitely in India, there it finds a place for nestle. Here, the ignorance, the lack of education, is justified by the want of time. Comparatively, I realized that the much-praised Romanian hospitality is an attribute lost on the ancestors’ table. While, for the Romanian the guest turned into an occasion for gossip, for drink or for flirt with the friend’s wife, for the Indian the guest is a divine messenger. In India, a guest is welcome even inside the insufficient spacious houses, because there, people have enough space in their hearts and this space with a fragrance of amazing nuances, compensate for. I heard around some observations. That we are more civilized than they are and I should confirm it concerning a civilization of lie. That we are more cultured than they are and I should confirm it, again, concerning of apishness cult. They are living within a naturally accepted hierarchy that is not only a facade moreover a still present reality. This is another reason for us to look them down on. On say that, this hierarchy is an obstacle against the progress. I wonder what serves for the anarchy that is at home in our minds and spirits. The European woman would have to learn from the Indian woman how to become again the family’s warm breath because there is some time since she lost this statute. The mutual devotion between wife and husband is almost bothering us. There, where the marriages are still fixing from childhood, the divorces are out of practice and out of practice is as well, the reciprocal spiritual ravishment of married people. The total abnegation inside the family as well as inside the work, the resignation in what concern their destiny guide them and annoy us so much that we are predisposed to suspect them of falsity and lie. Certainly, something that we cannot understand, something compensates the depriving of the first love’s shivers and finally uplifts them on the acmes of a sort of love much more real than that one which ends the European falling in love. The Indian people have a moral cleanliness and a demureness that we, the used to judge, cannot understand. Of a shyness somehow divine, Indian woman dances safe from men’s sights as well as safe for the husband’s sight. In this case, the carnal proximity, untransformed into a banality, cannot be else that a divine gift, maybe a part of the nourishment that cherishes the stability of the conjugal relationship. The modern European woman wastes a lot of time for the embellishment while she forgets about the soul’s beauty parlor. The European woman speaks loudly, she have to be the cynosure, walks almost naked on streets even when she is ungifted with something that belongs to the aesthetic category. Well, the Indian woman prepares every day the husband’s pet food and carries her child everywhere. The children’s education is one of the most important objectives; they start the school at the age of five. Indeed, the Indian children’s cleverness is already well known. The Indian women meet each other and instead of learning the masculinity, process that here became a fashion, they play and sing. They sing being present within their song. They laugh being present within their laughter. The Indian man is so present within all he does as if he would be inside the core of a ritual ceremony. They are not prepared to understand what certain turned us into specie of robots. Our children are bored and confused, almost deprived of an accurate direction that is vital for their future, for our future as a nation. Look at the India’s children. Listen to them. They are convinced that through them, the poor people of this country will live safety and soon they will all have a decent life. An overwhelming curiosity and vitality bring light into their eyes. Such a self-confidence, such faith into their role in what concern the nation’s destiny, reason you into check up again your way of living, your convictions and not at last to bow down. I emphasized purposely a few features that make us so different. I am sure that we have to accept learning each from the others. |
