Brontë says the rosebriar's play,
Its gay and foamy smile, Shall winter come, with due dismay, They'll naught but wither, deathly stray And love thus lived its while To whom I say, dost give me so Your thorns, your glee, your ire, Share your light and share your woe, Thine nacre pain do have me know, Heed my sincere desire In fiery storms, through life — the sea I'll be thy lover true and last, When much a pain we'll come to grieve, Thine tears and pangs trust I'll relieve One day in saint handfast Oh without thee to death I'm bound, A ship that has no sails I lack the art to sail, dumfound, The waves are pushing me around, Deafen'd by their wails When you grace me with your smile In life, this living chore, Torture leaves, come sweetest while, Dew expels the bitter bile And I feel pain no more Your tender eyes of luscious brown That wound me lacerating, Your wavy hair, the hallowed crown, My heart your naked body's gown Will be forever waiting You make a-living feel so light Just like the sunrays' gleam, With joy and laughter, loud and blithe You bless our hands that, holding tight, Feel like a summer's dream Every single time when we In loyal bonds are kissing — albeit eternal each will be, Mellow like a fruitful tree — Forever we'll be missing Though life is frightful and is frail I am in love with thee, In blust'ring squall and dreadful hail, In warm embrace, the sun's, we'll sail O'er the waveless sea O faithful Galatea, o nymph and fairy bright My life is all but thine, O thou who's glory of the Gods, thou art the cleanest light Thou art maiden fair and pure, Olympus' delight Like swans we shall entwine When Cupid's bow the faithful hart In bloody play injures Damon's wisdom keep at heart That suff'ring is the lover's part, Love evermore endures Woe befall the unconstant swain, Shall Venus ne'er grant his hour; But how stab thee ever might I deign? Your flames consume me and your pain: With warbling thirst thee I'll devour Yet charming love enchants me hither In your breasts' good bower: There softest hands appease my dither, Thy dulcet voice casts out the bitter And bids me waste the precious hour Hark! 'Tis the time when blood is fire And most ripe's the age, So you may not in passion tire, Do what your sweeter thoughts desire, In softer times let us engage To blooming love the Gods bestow Their burning lips on lovers lain, Heavn's powers betide us grow. The crowning wreath and our youth's glow In faithful love may ever reign Your cheeks burn Godly like the berry, For Chloris blessed your birth But while in youth may you be wary: Make much of time and nev'r tarry The short time we've on earth May fate our ending worthily weave, Venus and Adonis, they are we: For when the youth to hunt takes leave, In gore return'd for sacred grieve, She'd rather die with he Leave not my feelings be forlorn And love me true I pray, For without thee forever mourn, The gift of life — a stinging thorn And I'll be turning grey Lo! Fleeting stars across night's sky When dead do seem so near. Extinguish'd though their bodies lie, Their love they know will never die And thus they disappear The honey'd kiss of lovers' plea May wilt in twilight long, Still willows weep and birds agree So let there cruel winter be, I will embrace you strong.
