Biography Jean Toomer

Jean Toomer (1894-1967), recunoscut ca unul dintre poeții inovatori ai anilor ’20, a ridicat pe culmi noi expresia artistică a negrilor americani. Tatăl lui fusese negru născut liber, iar Eugene, de unde provine prenumele Jean, a fost doar mulatru. Jean Toomer a fost unul dintre cele mai proeminente talente ale renașterii negre. Printre scrierile sale, cea mai de seamă este Cane (1923), un volum de poeme, povestiri și schițe. La aceasta s-au adăugat piese de teatru și multe alte poeme și povestiri care relevă idealismul rasial și democratic.
